Each year around 500,000 wheat plants are grown under glass from around 4500 individual crosses, and over 2 million plants are grown in the field across the country and subjected to intensive selection for the UK market alone. In addition, many hundred thousand laboratory analyses are undertaken in state-of-the-art research laboratories to determine key nutritional, quality and agronomic characteristics.

RAGT Seeds also has wheat breeding programmes in France, Germany and the Czech Republic. Although the breeder in each country specializes in producing material for his own country, testing in a wide range of conditions and growing regimes ensures varieties are able to deliver consistent performance even under challenging conditions. Being part of one of Europe’s leading seeds business with 12 breeding stations in five countries gives the program the widest possible variety development and testing base.
